In 1996 the Hale-Bopp comet was perfectly aligned in front of my apartment. Every morning for weeks it was the first thing I saw walking outside and the last thing I saw before going in. I suppose people outside of South Dakota saw it as well, but, I suspect, not in such an all-encompassing way.

I stood in rushing water surrounded by my friends
That colde Vermillion river washed us around the bend
Like catfish we fought the tide and on the banks we dried
That day is burned in me, but no words survive

The comet didn't seem so far away, but it grew so very small
